Lawrenceburg Man Garners Drug Charges During Traffic Stop

A Lawrenceburg man was issued drug charges after being stopped in connection with traffic violations Monday night.

Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an officer initiated the stop after noticing a vehicle traveling northbound on North Locust Avenue without the headlights on.

When he stopped driver Jimmy Delowell Kennedy, 42, of 408 Geri Street, and approached the 2005 Ford Explorer, the officer noted detecting a strong odor of burned marijuana emanating from within.

The officer asked Kennedy whether he had driven all the way from his home without turning on his headlights.

Reports show that Kennedy responded “yes” explaining that, “The windows were so dark he could not tell they were not on.” He told the officer that he had recently purchased the vehicle and, “Was still trying to get used to it.”

When the officer questioned Kennedy about the smell, Kennedy allegedly admitted he had, “Just smoked a small piece of a joint earlier.”

Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and report seizing into evidence approximately two grams of marijuana along with forceps, a bottle of Xanax pills, and a bottle of Jagermeister liquor that had been opened with a small amount missing.

When the reporting officer asked Kennedy about the missing liquor, he notes that he admitted he had, “Taken a shot before he left.”

The reporting officer also noted that the prescription for 90 Xanax pills had been filled on December 3, but that there were only 6 pills remaining.

He said that he questioned Kennedy about the missing pills and that he told him his wife had taken them.

Officers made their way to Kennedy’s home and questioned his wife, however she told officers that she, “Didn’t know what they were talking about.”

The officer notes that Kennedy did perform satisfactorily on field sobriety tests. Based upon inconsistencies in his statements, however, “It is believed that Jimmy Kennedy is selling the medication.”

Kennedy was placed under arrest and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center. He was booked on charges that include simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of Schedule IV narcotics for the purpose of resale.

In addition, he was issued citations charging him with violation of the state light law, violation of the open container law, simple possession or casual exchange, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is scheduled to answer the charges in General Sessions Court on January 2, 2014.

Kennedy was incarcerated under a bond of $5,000.
